Wendy Pepper | Fashion Designer and Owner of Skylar Hill Confections

wendy pepper

For over 25 years Wendy has pursued a career in fashion and dedicated herself to learning the craft of dressmaking and tailoring.  Starting first in Nepal, she learned how to weave Tibetan carpets in the foothills of the Himalayas with women who dyed their yarns in vats full of steaming vegetable dyes.

Returning to the States, she studied beading with Native American artists in Pacific Northwest.  Later, she immersed herself in the spinning and knitting traditions in North Carolina, shibori resist techniques from Japan,  and the Amish quilts of Pennsylvania. Later, Wendy began to collect vintage sewing manuals from EBAY and drew inspiration from the old school approach to couture needlework.

Every culture has their shapes and patterns, color choices and texture preferences, and Wendy decided her life direction was to interpret those signifiers for clients who sought personal expression through their fashion choices.

In 2004 BRAVO launched the "Project Runway" franchise and Wendy was chosen to be on the first season.  She went on to design a limited edition Banana Republic dress that sold out within 24 hours online.  Her winning design chosen by Nancy O'Dell catapulted her into the finals of Season 1 and a solo Spring couture show in Bryant Park in February 2005.

After 25 years in the fashion business, Wendy has expanded her sights to exploring the role of pattern and color in her new artisan cookie business Skylar Hill Confections .  She continues to produce one of a kind fashion creations in her Middleburg studio, and finds this new lateral career move a fresh surprise addition to the products and services she offers the community.
